Apprenticeships: Building a Pipeline of Talent
Apprenticeship programs are a great way for companies to build their own pipeline of high-quality, skilled trades workers. With the State of California and community colleges putting more money and effort into apprenticeships, manufacturers should take advantage of the benefits apprenticeship offers. This session will answer your questions and cover the basics to show you how you can begin incorporating apprentices into your workforce in 3 easy steps!
Presented by Mark Martin, Ph.D., Regional Director, Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Development – Bay Area

Mark Martin, Ph.D., is the Bay Area Regional Director for Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Development for the California Community Colleges. Dr. Martin has more than 25 years of experience in manufacturing and engineering, including product development, manufacturing and design research, teaching and workforce development.
Emerging Technologies in Manufacturing
Emerging technologies are expected to transform manufacturing by making it more efficient, flexible, and responsive to customer needs. Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence will drive the automation of manufacturing processes for greater consistency and quality in production. Digital transformation of manufacturing will enable manufacturers to create “smart factories” that are more connected and responsive than ever before. With a digital thread running throughout the production process, manufacturers will be able to collect, analyze, and mine data in real-time to guide decision making, optimize production, and minimize downtime. Such transformational advances will enable manufacturers to create novel products and services, enter new markets, and compete more effectively in rapidly changing business environments.
Presented by Eric Duoss, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Engineered Materials and Manufacturing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Stay Competitive and Take Control of Your Operating Costs
Rising electricity rates and more frequent extreme weather leads to higher energy bills and lower margins for manufacturers in the Bay Area. Hear how some businesses are taking control of their operating costs without compromising productivity or product quality, while leveraging technical services and incentive funding provided by various clean energy programs. Attendees will learn how to assess the opportunities available, program incentive funding, and the steps they can take to reduce their energy costs.
Presented by Diana Chou, Customer Programs Manager at MCE & Martin Bond, Senior Business Development Manager at MCE

Diana Chou manages two of MCE’s energy efficiency incentive programs serving industrial, agricultural, large commercial, and multifamily property customers. She brings over a decade of experience in clean energy and energy efficiency programs, where she has supported a myriad of companies in identifying, implementing, and tracking energy efficiency and energy conservation projects.

Martin Bond works to ensure that MCE commercial and industrial customers have the resources needed to make the energy choices that are best for them. Martin has more than 15 years of experience in design and implementation of advanced energy efficiency and solar technology programs with residents and businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area. Martin previously was an adjunct professor at Laney College in their Green Jobs Program, is LEED certified and is a licensed General Building Contractor.
Hiring the Justice Impacted
Learn how you can grow your workforce by recruiting and hiring non-traditional candidates, including formerly incarcerated individuals. Attendees will leave the session with concrete steps on the best approach to hiring justice-impacted individuals, including what organizations offer assistance, how to help these individuals make the transition, etc. Hear from community partners and manufacturers who have successfully hired and retained justice-impacted individuals.
